Welcome to The Natural Mum. I am Grace – the creator of this page and I am blessed to be a stay at home Mum, studying Midwifery full time and tandem feeding my two beautiful sons.
As a young first time Mum, I was overwhelmed with the decisions I would have to make during pregnancy and birth and like many others I turned to the internet and social media support groups for advice.
Sadly I can see now that most of that advice was full of misinformation or not in my true best interest. Your probably thinking “well don’t ask strangers on Facebook then…” but this was the case for most online resources, blogs and parenting pages too.
My first pregnancy was complicated by hyperemisis gravidarum, gestational diabetes, intrauterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia. I was under the care of a private obstetrician who never made me feel assured. My concerns were brushed off and despite my complications nothing was voluntarily explained to me. I, the 20 year old first time Mother, had to pull answers out of the professional Obstetrician with 15+ years experience.
I left each appointment feeling more confused or concerned than when I walked through the doors. In the end, I was induced with syntocinon at 37 weeks, had an epidural after 5 hours and my son spent 5 nights in NICU. Despite my desire for a natural birth and most importantly a baby who wouldn’t require NICU time, I was uninformed and disempowered.
By my second pregnancy I was adamant to not have a repeat of my last. With thanks to a few trustworthy resources I learnt more and more about associated risks of what was previously portrayed as simply a personal preference. So many questions started coming to mind.
Why were the risks of induction never raised? Why were the only words spoken about my upcoming birth to do with what pain relief I could choose? Why was I told to give my baby formula without being counselled on the risk? Or how about the possibility of my baby going into NICU instead of into my arms?
I did further readings from reliable websites, books and conversed with other Mother’s in specialised like-minded groups. I learnt, I committed and I grew.
For my next child, I had a fantastic pregnancy (despite developing hyperemesis gravederum and pre-eclampsia again) where I was informed and in control. Even though under an Obstetrician and in a hospital setting again, I experienced a beautiful and uninhibited drug free birth – free from unnecessary intervention.
It’s for these reasons (and because I’m pregnancy/birth/breastfeeding obsessed!) that I want to help empower other women to be well informed on their amazing journey to Motherhood.
Natural birth and successful breastfeeding are not due to luck. Its owed to being armed with the right knowledge, committing to goals, learning new skills and techniques and most importantly – persevering!
